A grand jury indicted Tina Peters (a Colorado county clerk) and her deputy on a laundry of charges that relate to an election security breach that occurred in her office last year that was motivated by the false claims of former President Donald Trump that he won 2020.

Peters is facing charges as election workers across the U.S. are threatened with death by a disinformation campaign that falsely alleges widespread election tampering in 2020. Many election officials find Peters’ case worrying because it could be a sign of insiders acting on conspiracy theories and further undermining trust in the voting process.

Peters is the Mesa County clerk and recorder, which is located in western Colorado. He faces 10 charges, including seven felonies and three misdemeanors. The felony charges against Peters include identity theft, criminal impersonation, and conspiracy to criminal impersonate. Misdemeanors include official misconduct in the first degree, violation of duty, and failure to comply the secretary of states requirements.

Belinda Knisley was indicted as her deputy on six charges, including conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and attempt to influence public servants.
