Colorado Republican Party leaders urged Peters not to run for office.

“It is our belief that anyRepublican Candidate who is indicted by a grand jury with felonies and who will face a Republican District attorney should suspend their campaign while they deal with the legal challenges associated to those indictments,” stated a joint statement by the party’s top leaders.

Peters was banned by a judge from supervising Mesa County’s election in 2021. The county then had to seek outside assistance to manage its staff. Peters is being sued in a current case.

After the state decertified them last autumn, the county was required to replace them. This was just weeks before the election.

The Colorado County Clerks Association, a bipartisan organization, called the “breach” devastating. It stated from the beginning that it wanted to see Mesa County fully investigated and that, if wrongdoing was found out and tried to prosecute it.

“From Clerk Peters’ initial public reports, it was obvious that she had violated her office oath and possibly broken the law. In sworn court filings, she repeatedly stated that she had committed acts that violated her oath. A grand jury made up of her peers and seated by her district attorney, has found that she is accused of several crimes, including official misconduct.

The investigation has split Republican elected officials from the conservative section of Colorado, who have voiced their disapproval at her actions.

Scott McInnis (Republican) is Mesa County Commissioner and has described the long-running investigation into Peters’ as a series of mini-crises that included legal questions, public hearings, and fights between Peters and her supporters.

He stated that if Peters truly believed her county’s voting machine were being hacked she should have called the appropriate authorities to investigate.

“There is a right and wrong way to do it. She chose the wrong way because she wanted attention. She wanted to tell the country why Trump lost. “This is my opinion.”

Colorado legislators will consider legislation in this session to prevent future security breaches.
