Kaepernick was a second round pick by the 49ers in 2011. He first emerged as the second-year successor of Alex Smith. In 2012, Kaepernick displayed dual-threat talent in San Francisco’s run for Super Bowl VIII. In his first year as a starter for the 49ers, he threw 21 touchdowns, eight interceptions and 524 rushing yard in his first year. After completing his first full season in San Francisco, he moved on to the bench between 2015-16 and then opted out of his contract in 2017.
