Kaepernick suggested that he would like to remain in NFL form in the recent years while focusing most of his work on civil-rights and nonprofit projects, including a recently launched Autopsy Initiative to support families of victims of “police-related deaths.” However, he has not played since 2016, his sixth and last season with the 49ers.

Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, openly encouraged the signing of Kaepernick by teams prior to the 2020 season. The league also pursued new racial justice initiatives and acknowledged Kaepernick’s efforts to raise awareness about related issues. After years of conflict between Kaepernick and the NFL, that was after a confidential settlement. After Kaepernick’s 2016 protests over the national anthem, which he had started in 2016, the league reached a confidential settlement. The NFL later organized a Kaepernick workout to audition for teams interested in him, but he withdrew just before the event due to concerns about the NFL’s rules.
