Android Group Chats Now Have End-to End Encryption

In 2020, Google began testing end to-end encryption within Messages. This will bring greater security to Android’s default messaging app. This is a major win for Android. However, it’s part of Google’s ongoing efforts to promote the RCS communication standard for text messages across all devices. Google has been on the offensive against Apple using the SMS and MMS messaging standards for cross-platform communication. Google’s encryption does not work for SMS messages, but only for RCS.

Apple’s Headset Tech gets a new name

Bloomberg has reported that Apple has changed the name of its software platform to run augmented-and virtual-reality apps. This is a minor move that could indicate Apple is closer to announcing the long-awaited mixed-reality headset. The former RealityOS working name of xrOS has been replaced by xrOS.

For months, leaks have been coming out about the headset . No details or features are officially confirmed, as it is with Apple. The new name would indicate that both the headset and the app that runs on it will be equipped with AR and VR features, a combination known as extended reality or mixed realities in the industry. Apple has not yet announced a release date for the device, although it is becoming increasingly possible that they will do so next year.

Apple’s offering, whatever it may be, will likely go head-to-head with Meta’s Meta Quest Pro VR headset. Sony’s PlayStationVR2 system is also set to hit the market in 2019. VR is set to become very popular, regardless of whether consumers want to fully explore the technology.

New Gorilla Glass

For those who have been causing phone problems for years, good news: A stronger version of Gorilla Glass could soon be available at a screen near them. Corning, which makes Gorilla Glass, showcased its new Victus2 material in product videos, where it conducted tests to simulate the cracking of the glass against concrete. Corning claims that the new formula can withstand a drop of one meter on the notoriously hard surface. That’s equivalent to 3.28 feet in America. Although it may not seem like much it can help reduce the terror that you feel when your phone accidentally falls out of your pocket and you try to retrieve it from your pants pocket.

According to the company, Victus 2 can withstand an additional meter of impact if dropped on asphalt or other soft surfaces than concrete. It has not yet been included in any new phone models, but you can expect it to be in the next year’s line of handsets.

Time buying

You’ve likely noticed the pay later option at checkout when you shop online. These services allow you to purchase the items you desire and then pay off the balance in monthly installments. You can avoid interest fees by doing it quickly enough. This is a great option for cash-strapped buyers who want to make large purchases. The thing is that BNPL services aren’t just for expensive items. They are also using them for essential necessities such as gas and groceries.

We discuss the buy now, pay it later business model on WIRED’s GadgetLab podcast and its implications for your wallet.
