Academy Decides: Will Smith Banned from Oscars Ceremony for Next ten Years after Chris Rock Slap

Will Smith officially resigned from Academy last week, stating that he would accept any additional consequences the Board considers appropriate.

Two weeks ago, Will Smith smashed Chris Rock onstage at The Oscars. Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to retaliate under its guidelines.

The Academy’s Board of Governors met virtually to discuss the situation. They ultimately decided that Mr. Smith would not be allowed to attend any Academy events, programs, or in person, starting April 8, 2022. This was according to a letter from Academy President David Rubin, and CEO Dawn Hudson, obtained by PEOPLE.

“We did not address the actual situation in the room during our telecast. We are sorry for this. We had the opportunity to show the world that we are capable of leading by example, but we failed to do so.
