Pinkett Smith looked at Smith with a smirk, while Smith initially laughed and clapped his hands before he was spotted on stage, walking up towards Rock.

In the immediate aftermath, the comedian appeared stunned but said to the audience: “That night was the most memorable in television history.”

Variety was later informed by the Los Angeles Police Department that Rock “declined” to file a report following the incident.

Rock presented the best documentary prize after the incident. This was the reason Rock was on stage.

According to the The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, a tearful Smith had to be “pulled aside” and “comforted” by Tyler Perry and Denzel Washington.

During an advert break, the trio was seen talking directly in front of Smith while Perry and Washington placed their hands on his shoulders. Bradley Cooper, an actor in A Star is Born, was also seen standing beside Smith and appearing to comfort him.
