This Enormous Gorgosaurus Fossil will be Up for Public Auction

It was an apex carnivore and lived in the west of the United States and Canada in the late Cretaceous Period. It shares many similarities with the T-Rex gene, such as a large head and dozens of sharply curved teeth. According to Sotheby’s, however, it was slower than a T.Rex and had stronger bite force.

This Tyrannosaurid member lived on the Earth around 77 million years ago.

Sotheby’s stated that the Gorgosaurus was the master hunter of its era, and was thought to have hunted in packs up of four.

According to Sotheby’s, the fossil measures 10 feet tall and 22 inches long. It was found near Havre, Montana in 2018. The only Gorgosaurus skeleton that is available for private purchase is the one currently in museum collections.

“In my career, I have had many unique and exceptional objects to handle and sell, but few can inspire wonder and capture imaginations like this incredible Gorgosaurus Skelet,” Cassandra Hatton (Sotheby’s global head for science and popular culture), stated in a news release. A Gorgosaurus was only discovered a few years back. It has never been offered at auction before, making it a unique opportunity and a highlight in my career.

This is Sotheby’s second sale of a fossilized skeleton from a dinosaur. The auction house also sold “Sue” in 1997 for $8.36million. This sale set a new record for the most expensive fossil sold at auction.

The Gorgosaurus Skeleleton is open to dinosaur lovers starting July 21 at Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries. It goes up for auction on July 28.
