Samsung Has Another Data Breach. Should You Be Concerned?

Samsung, the Korean TV and smartphone giant, lost unspecified amounts of data related to unspecified customers. Samsung kept it quiet for nearly a month.

What happened then? Which Samsung users were affected? Are Samsung users safe?

What happened in the Samsung Data Breach

Samsung doesn’t know the details of the data breach. Or at least it’s not saying so in its September 2nd press statement. It states that “in late July 2022, an unauthorized third party obtained information from some of Samsung’s U.S. system systems”.

“We want our customers to know that the issue did not impact Social Security numbers or debit and credit card numbers. However, in some cases, it may have affected information such as name, contact, demographic information, date and birth information, as well as product registration information. Each customer’s information may be affected in a different way.

Most likely, contact details include email, phone number, and home address. Additional information collected during product registration may include gender, exact geolocation data, and Samsung Account profile ID. Criminals can have access to even just your email addresses.

Samsung’s halfhearted assurance may comfort some customers that criminals aren’t using their credit cards to buy untraceable cryptocurrency. The amount of information that the company has admitted could be taken is astonishing and cannot be dismissed as irrelevant.
