New Trailer Shows David Tennant’s Return to Doctor Who

Gatwa was not what audiences saw at the end of the episode. Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, pictured regenerating on the edge of a cliff in glorious sunlight, was actually David Tennant. The Tenth Doctor, played by the Scot from 2005 to 2010, was already confirmed to be returning for three specials next season with his former companion and assistant Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). But now it is clear what the context is. The BBC stated that Tennant would play the Fourteenth Doctor. This was not a reprisal role for the Tenth Doctor. It also confirmed the confusion of the character at having ‘the same teeth’. Gatwa was also called the Fifteenth Doctor.

Doctor Who will be back in November 2023.

In a BBC statement, Showrunner Russell T. Davies stated:

“If you thought David Tennant’s appearance was shocking, there are many more surprises in store! There are many things to do on the path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor. How is this connected to Donna Noble’s return? How, what, and why? We give you one year to think, then all hell breaks loose!”

Whittaker’s final episode pitted her against some of Time Lord’s most formidable foes: Cybermen, Daleks, and Master ( Sacha Dawan). This episode went back to the beginnings of Doctor Who, with David Bradley reprising his role as William Hartnell’s first Doctor. A 90-minute special featured cameo appearances by those who piloted Tardis in the 1980s and 1990s. In appearances that were highly guarded and protected by the BBC, Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Colin Baker all returned to their roles as Doctors.
