Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe Movie Receives A Uncommon NC-17 Rating For Sexual Content

Andrew Dominik, director of the film, is based upon Joyce Carol Oates’ novel. He previously stated to Screen Daily that it would be awarded an NC-17. It’s up to the audience to decide if they don’t like it. It is not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 film about Marilyn Monroe. You can do what you want. I would love to see the NC-17 version about Marilyn Monroe.

According to the director, Netflix also demanded Jennifer Lame ( TENET), an editor, “to curb the excesses in the movie.” This includes a rape scene which was also included in Oates’ book.

Oates’ 2000 bestseller is a fictionalized 700-page account of Monroe’s life The New Yorker once called “the definitive study on American celebrity.”
