Disney heir is publicly identified as transgender and condemns anti-LGBTQ legislation
They condemned anti-LGBTQ legislation and pointed out that LGBTQ children already experience higher rates of suicide, depression, and anxiety.
“Then to add something like this law? According to the L.A. Times, they can’t learn anything about their community or their history at school or play sports or use the restroom they like.”
The Walt Disney Co. was under fire after The Orlando Sentinel reported in Feb that every sponsor and cosponsor of Parental Rights in Education had received donations. In a staff email, Bob Chapek, Disney CEO, stated that he and his company’s leadership “unambiguously stand” with LGBTQ employees. CNN reported that Chapek didn’t condemn the bill but that corporate statements “do very little to change outcomes or minds.”
After internal criticism, Chapek declared that all political donations in Florida would be halted. He also apologized for his initial statement in a letter published on Disney’s site.
He wrote, “It is evident that this isn’t just an issue regarding a bill from Florida but instead yet another challenge for basic human rights.” “You expected me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights, and I let you down. I am sorry.”
Roy P. Disney stated that his family wanted to donate because the Human Rights Campaign refused a $5 million donation announced last month by Chapek. Joni Madison, interim president of the group, stated that HRC wants Disney to “build on their public engagement and work with LGBTQ+ advocates in order to ensure that dangerous propositions, such as Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill don’t become harmful laws and, if they do, work to repeal them.”
Charlee’s mother Sheri Disney said that Charlee needed to remind everyone of the importance of supporting LGBTQ children.
She told the L.A. Times, “I have a trans child, and I love him no matter what,”
