Before Coltrane became famous for his portrayal of Hagrid the bearded Hagrid on stage, he had already honed his comedy skills on the theatre stages.

He appeared alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson in an obscure sketch series called “Alfresco” in the 1980s.

Fry posted a statement to Twitter on Friday in honor of his former star.

“I met Robbie Coltrane for the first time almost 40 years ago. I was simultaneously awestruck, terrified, and in love with Robbie Coltrane. He wrote that such depth, power, and talent were enough to cause helpless honking and hiccups as we created our first TV series, “Alfresco.” “Farewell, old fellow.
