Scientists Have Finally Decoded The Entire Human Genome

Scientists claim they have finally assembled the complete genetic blueprint for human existence, adding the missing pieces in a puzzle that was nearly completed over two decades ago.

In research published in Science on Thursday, an international team reported the first-ever sequencing of the human genome.

This is the sequence of instructions that allows us to create and sustain human beings. It was a huge success, and it was widely celebrated around the globe. However, the DNA sequencing technology of that day couldn’t read some parts. It was missing approximately 8% of its genome, even after several updates.

Evan Eichler, a University of Washington researcher, said that “some of the genes that make us unique humans were actually in the ‘dark matter of our genome’ and were completely missed.” He was a participant in both the original Human Genome Project and the current effort. It took us 20 years to get it done.

Many, including Eichler’s students, thought it was finished. “I was teaching them and they said, “Wait, a minute. This isn’t the sixth time that you guys have declared victory. I replied, “No, this was the sixth time that we have declared victory!”
