Previous research has shown that diabetes can affect sperm quality and impair male fertility. The researchers also compared the rates of birth defects in babies born to men who took insulin to metformin to make sure that diabetes was not an underlying factor. The researchers found no association between insulin use and a rise in birth defects.

Researchers did not find any association between paternal diabetes medication and birth defects.

The authors point out that they didn’t have data on diabetes other than glycemic control and medication compliance. They only assessed prescriptions filled. Additionally, children who received paternal metformin exposure had a higher likelihood of having parents older than them and with lower socioeconomic status. This may have played a part.
