Film of Prince at 11 Years Old Discovered in Archival Footage From 1970 Mpls. Teachers strike

MINNEAPOLIS — There are many, if not thousands, of ways to travel back in history in the WCCO film archive. One reel contained a treasure that remained untouched for 52 years.

It was April 1970. Minneapolis Public Schools teachers went on strike.

WCCO restored the film in order to provide context for the educator’s strike that occurred in the same district last month.

Matt Liddy, WCCO Production Manager, learned that 13 minutes of the video had been remastered from the film in 1970 and decided to take a look.

“I was raised in Minneapolis and all I remember was seeing the cool buildings that were there when I was a kid. Do you recognize the school I attended? “Liddy asked.

When he saw a reporter interviewing children as teachers picked in the background near school, his curiosity turned into an opportunity to discover. One young boy answered a question that Liddy was speechless about.
