A New Treatment For Colorectal And Ovarian Cancer In Mice Could Be Found

“We only give one dose, but the drug factories keep making it every day until the cancer is gone,” Omid Veiseh, a bioengineer at Rice University in Texas.

“Once we had determined the right dose, which was how many factories were needed, we were able eradicate tumors from 100 percent of animals suffering from ovarian cancer as well as seven of eight colorectal cancer patients.”

Interleukin-2, one of several immune system-triggering proteins known as cytokines, is also a member of the group. Cytokines have been used to treat cancers such as melanoma or renal carcinoma. However, scientists are having trouble finding cytokines that fight tumors while avoiding severe side effects.

The beads were placed in the abdomen’s peritoneum (a sac-like lining that surrounds the intestines and ovaries) during the study. This allows the drugs to target cancer in a specific way without causing excessive weight or volume.
