Melissa Etheridge Believes that Beckett’s Death Taught Her that No One Can Save Him.
Melissa Etheridge said that her grief over the death of her son Beckett was “endless.”
The “Come to My Window” singer spoke to The Daily Beast to discuss Beckett. She shared Beckett with ex Julie Cypher (with donor sperm by David Crosby) before he died in 2020 from opioid addiction. She shared the lessons that her loss has taught her and said that her family is still grieving.

She said that the greatest lesson was, “He taught us that I can’t save anyone else and I am not expected to save anyone else.” He said that the best thing I could do was to stand in my truth and love of myself. He didn’t get it, but drugs got him there.
Etheridge stated that Beckett had been in a downward spiral into addiction since he was 17. When he was 17, he was training to become a professional snowboarder. He reportedly had hopes of competing in the X Games. An ankle injury caused him to be prescribed painkillers, which eventually led to substance abuse. Etheridge stated that the injury “shattered” his life because he couldn’t do what he was passionate about anymore. It affected his self-confidence.
Etheridge stated that she tried her best to help her son as a parent by offering treatment programs and sometimes tough love.
