The Sessho-seki rock, a large volcanic rock that is believed to instantly kill anyone who touches it, is deeply rooted in Japanese mythology. It is thought to be the transformed corpse from the mythical Tamamo-no–Mae. Tamamo-no–Mae was supposedly a beautiful lady whose spirit was possessed or kitune by the nine-tailed Fox, or kitsune, which is a demon spirit that tricks and deceives using disguise. Tamamo-no–Mae is known to answer all questions. She was part of a plot against Emperor Toba to seduce and murder him. Two mythological warriors exposed the fox spirit and chased it down. The spirit then embedded itself in the Sessho–seki stone, where it released a poisonous gas which killed all who touched it.
