According to legend, the spirit haunted the rock. It was designated a historical site in 1957. A Buddhist priest then performed rituals to make the spirit rest.

It has now been reported that the stone killing has split in half, probably due to natural erosion. According to the Guardian the cracks in the volcanic rock were likely caused by water intrusion several years ago. This may have helped it to erode from the inside.
