This virus does not have any genetic features that were previously linked to other bird flu. And the only person the potential threat these viruses could pose to American birds.
In December 2021, chickens and other fowl became sick and began to die on a farm in Newfoundland, Canada. The deadly bird flu virus was detected in tests.
“The very moment it reached North America, it was an alert to us,” states Bryan Richards the emerging diseases coordinator at U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center.
After a positive test by wigeon ducks in South Carolina, officials in the United States announced that the virus had arrived in the country. Richards states that the number of cases in which dangerous bird flu was detected in wild birds was very low since the last time it entered the country.
