An inquest by the BBC found that Mansfield incorrectly calculated the amount and felt immediately unwell. He had a rapid heartbeat and complained of chest pain. An ambulance was dispatched. He was taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital, Wales. Paramedics tried to revive him for 45 minutes before declaring him dead.

Caffeine toxicity was the official cause of death.

Blackburn Distributions produced the specific caffeine powder that Mansfield used. It is recommended to consume 200mg per day, and the maximum daily intake is 400mg.
