Oklahoma Legislature approves bill banning abortions following ‘fertilization’

In anticipation of Roe v. Wade being overturned by the US Supreme Court next month, Republican-led states have been pushing for strict abortion measures. This is in relation to a Mississippi abortion law. Earlier this month, a leaked draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito showed that the conservative-majority court was poised to overturn Roe, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion nationwide.

Alexis McGill Johnson, president, and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America said Thursday in a statement that if Stitt signs the bill, Oklahoma would be the first state to outlaw abortion completely — even though Roe is still in effect.

“What little abortion access remains in the state” she stated, adding that Oklahoma patients and others who rely on the state’s access will face a crisis.
