Elon Musk Calls for Increased Production of Oil and Nuclear Power
Many countries have eliminated nuclear power following accidents such as the partial meltdown of Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island plant in 1979, the Chernobyl meltdown by Ukraine in 1986, and the Fukushima catastrophe in Japan in 2011. Chernobyl’s meltdown occurred while Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union. The former site is now occupied by Russian forces.
Germany is one of the European countries that are moving away from nuclear energy. Angela Merkel, then-Chancellor of Germany, announced in 2011 that she would be phasing out coal and nuclear power in favor renewable energy. Germany ended three nuclear power plants in 2021. Three other plants remain active.
Bloomberg observed that Germany is becoming more dependent upon Russia for natural gas and coal supplies. However, Russia was surprised by Germany’s halting approval Nord Stream 2, a natural-gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany after the invasion in Ukraine.
