Will Smith Has Resigned From Academy Over Chris Rock Oscars Backlash
Will Smith is facing suspension or expulsion after he attacked Chris Rock last Sunday’s Oscars telecast.
Instead, he resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. This comes at a time when Smith is in the most serious crisis of his career, and the Academy Awards organization has been struggling to deal with the aftermath. Smith released a statement calling his actions “shocking and painful” and stating that he would accept any additional consequences the Academy Board of Governors determines necessary.
Smith stated, “The list is long of people I have hurt and includes Chris, his loved ones, many of my dearest friends and loved ones as well as all those present at the event and global audiences at large.” I betrayed the Academy’s trust. I denied other winners and nominees the opportunity to be recognized for their exceptional work. I am heartbroken.”
