US legislators urge Google to limit the collection of location data by Google in order to protect abortionists.

Google did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

Tuesday’s letter comes after the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion which would overturn Roe V. Wade and allow state lawmakers to pass laws that criminalize abortion. Reproductive rights and civil liberties advocates warn that law enforcement could submit data to technology platforms in order to crack down on those seeking abortion and possibly those who help them.

The lawmakers demanded that Google reduce its collection of customer location data and retain non-aggregate data about customers on Tuesday.

The letter stated that no law required Google to keep track of customers’ movements. Apple has proven that it’s not necessary for smartphone companies to keep invasive tracking databases of customers’ locations. Google’s deliberate decision to do this is creating a digital divide in which privacy and security are considered a luxury.
