Tech firms request the U.S. Supreme Court block Texas’ social media law

In September, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (a Republican) signed it into law.

Internet lobbying groups NetChoice, Computer & Communications Industry Association, filed a lawsuit in opposition to the measure. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman issued a preliminary order in December.

Pitman found that the law would affect social media companies’ freedom of speech rights under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

In an emergency request, the tech groups asked the Supreme Court for permission to allow the District Court’s carefully reasoned reasoning to continue in force while an orderly appellate procedure plays out.
