The First Lady received only a mixed response from critical chief TV critic Caroline Framke was not a fan of the series’ structural conceit. She wrote that “squeezing them together doesn’t just create confusing television but also does a disservice to all of them in the process.” Framke, who was not a fan of the series high-profile production, received three craft nominations across all categories.

The 10-episode series was produced for Showtime Television by Lionsgate Television. It was created by Aaron Cooley and executive produced by Oscar winner Schulman of Welle Entertainment. Schulman also served as showrunner. All episodes of the inaugural season were directed by Oscar-winning director Bier. Cooley and Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Alyson Feltes, Jeff Gaspin, Brad Kaplan, and Pavlina Hatoupis served as executive producers.

Deadline first reported the cancellation of the series.
