Scammers Pose as Internet and Cable Providers to Trick You

Recently, the Federal Trade Commission received numerous reports from scammers claiming to be internet and cable companies. These scammers are skilled at deceit and can fool even the most savvy consumer.

Scammers are stealing hard-working people’s hard-earned money over the phone, despite call-blocking software and caller ID.

Recently, a woman emailed me to inform me that this exact thing happened to her and her spouse.

“We received a phone call yesterday from a scammer claiming to represent Cox Cable. Two or three days ago, we had canceled Cox cable TV. This caller knew about it. If we reconnect, they offered a 40% discount. I asked about the cost but he refused to give me the price. He wanted to verify the account and asked for my maiden name. The red flag was raised. I answered, “May I call back in 15 minutes”, with the intent of calling Cox Cable and checking the number. I was told he would call me back. After I had done a Google search for the number, and called Cox Cable to verify, it was a scam call. The caller did not return my call. I called my parents, who are older, to alert them to these scams. “
