Russia claims its Peresvet laser weapon can blind satellites and burn drones

Russia claims it has a laser weapon that can both blind satellites orbiting around Earth and inflict thermal destruction on a drone hovering in mid-air, miles away.

Reuters reports (Opens in a new tab) The mobile laser weapon, called Peresvet, was first revealed by Vladimir Putin in 2018. Yesterday, Yury Borisov, the deputy prime minister, stated at a Moscow conference that the laser had destroyed a drone from 5km (3miles) in five seconds.

Borisov claimed that “it can blind all satellite-reconnaissance systems of a probable enemy in orbits up to 1,500km, disabling them during flights due to the use laser radiation.” This could be Russia’s plan to down Starlink, if hacking continues(Opens in new window)
