“Minions: Rise of Gru” Breaks July 4th Box Office Records with $129M Opening

Forget about setting pandemic-era records with a family movie; the Illumination and Universal movies will have one of the highest starts at the domestic box office for animated Hollywood tentpoles, and this is not adjusted for inflation.

Friday’s total was $48 million, from 4,400 theaters. This includes a substantial $10.8 million in previews.

It is important that the movie’s performance confirms that both parents and younger children are willing to go back to the multiplex. Animation films were considered to be a challenging genre throughout the pandemic. It was not helped when Pixar’s Toy Story spunoff Flashyear opened at a paltry $51 million last month, before plummeting in its second outing. (But, Flashyear reached a significant milestone on Friday by crossing the $100 million domestically).
