James Hong, 93, finally receives a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

A few other Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders will be awarded stars this year as well, such as Jason Momoa and Ming-Na Wen, and apl.de.ap who is Filipino and is a member of the Black Eyed Peas. Hong was a veteran of the industry for over 70 years and has been a tireless advocate for more Asian American representation within Hollywood.

Hong, along with other Asian American artists, founded the Asian American theater group East West Players. This was in 1965. Hong is a veteran of the military and has worked as an engineer for many years. He told NBC Asian America about his early experiences and that he was inspired by his desire to fight for equity.

Hong recalls that when he returned from Hong Kong as a nine-year-old, he was beaten up at the grade school playgrounds because he couldn’t understand English. “From that moment, I fought all my way to where I am now. All Asian Americans, regardless of nationality, should be encouraged to let their hair down and express themselves. Things will improve.
