Horizon Worlds Gets a Meta Tag for 18+, Opening up The Doors to Mature VR Content

This is based on a Wayback Machine of Meta’s Horizon Mature Worlds Policy page. It means that Meta now allows content previously banned. The page stated that Horizon Worlds was not allowed to include sexually explicit content or depictions of “regulated goods and activities”, such as alcohol and weed, nor were graphically violent contents. You may now be able to include these types of content in your world if you mark it as mature.

There are still restrictions. Let’s take a look at them.

You can mark your word “mature” to allow for “sexually suggestive content such as “near nudity,” depictions or people in suggestive or implied positions, and environments that focus on activities that are too suggestive.

This is true for both regulated substances as well as violence. You can have mature worlds that are focused on or dedicated to “the promotion or use of marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, or other age-regulated activities (including gaming),” but you cannot promote illegal drugs or abuse prescription drugs.

It is possible to notice some blurred lines in certain places. What is too suggestive about sex? In the US, marijuana is an illicit drug in many areas. Metaverse moderation is a critical aspect of a company’s success. This leaves room for problems to arise with creators who want to push the limits.

According to its policy page, Meta has struggled to ensure Horizon is a safe and welcoming environment. After complaints about people mimicking sexual harassment, it created a system to prevent other users from placing their avatars too close. The game also has a feature that allows you to make other people’s voices unintelligible, which can help you avoid harassment in virtual public places.
