Dave Chappelle Discusses Kanye, Trump and Antisemitism in the ‘SNL’ Monologue

Before he started his routine, Kanye unfolded a piece of paper and wrote: “I denounce antisemitism. Kanye said, “I stand with my Jewish friends.”

Chappelle, in an apparent reference to the backlash comics, gets when their jokes are deemed offensive by audiences, ended his monologue by telling the audience that he doesn’t enjoy performing in front of large audiences. He said, “It shouldn’t be so scary to talk about any topic, it makes my job extremely difficult.

Chappelle has made explicit jokes regarding transgender women’s bodies in several standup specials over the years.

He said, “I hope they don’t take anything from me.” “Whoever they may be.”

This was after his multi-million-dollar Netflix special, “The Closer,” which offended LGBTQ advocates. It also led to some Netflix employees protesting the company and calling for the special to be canceled.

Netflix stood behind the special. It was later nominated for two Emmys. Chappelle addressed this criticism while on tour shortly following the release of his special. He stated that he was open to talking with transcritics but would not “begin to anyone’s demands”.

Chappelle stated that he approached West when West was in trouble. However, Chappelle said that he waited to see the reaction to West’s antisemitic remarks. Chappelle joked that Kanye got into so much trouble, Kyrie got into trouble” referring to the NBA star who was suspended for making comments on a link posted to an antisemitic film on social media.

Chappelle stated that he could see West “adopting the delusion of the Jews running show business,” adding that “I know that the Jewish people have gone through terrible things all around the globe, but that can’t be attributed to Black Americans.” It’s impossible.
