Bill Gates-backed company claims that breast milk from the lab is only 3 to 5 years away
BIOMILQ’s team works on artificial human milk production using human breast tissue from local women and milk donated by them.
In return, the donors receive a Target gift card.
Strickland stated that it is still three to five years before the company can bring a product to market.
The company must first grow cells on a larger scale at lower costs than they are doing now.
BIOMILQ must also be approved by regulatory agencies to prove that it is safe for infants.
Strickland, who was originally a cell biologist, came up with this idea after being inspired by lab-grown meat products.
According to her, artificial milk will have a nutrient profile that is closer to human milk than baby formula made from cow milk.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life. Breastfeeding with solid foods is then recommended until the infant is one.
According to the Mayo Clinic’s findings, the baby formula doesn’t provide the same immune-boosting nutrients as breast milk. Breast milk, however, is easier to digest.
