The Low-Cost VR Honeymoon Has Come to An End
It’s a summer surprise. Meta raised the entry-level price of its two-year old Quest2 VR headset suddenly, jumping from $299 up to $400 beginning Aug. It is rare for a product to become more expensive than two years after it was released. These are not normal times and the Quest 2 wasn’t a normal headset.
Meta claims that the price rise helps it invest in VR and the Metaverse. However, the Quest 2 headset was priced artificially higher than what a device such as that should have been. Although it is unfortunate, this does not mean that VR tech will stop rising in price. We know that the price of the next generation of VR headsets is going to rise soon.
These next devices won’t be impulse buys, though I don’t mean to stress you.
The expected ” Quest Pro”, also known as Project Cambria is Meta’s next headset. It should be available this fall. The headset will have better eye tracking and display quality. It also has mixed reality capabilities that blend real life with virtual reality using color-passthrough cameras. It is expected to retail for more than $800.
According to reports, Apple’s long-awaited VR headset could rise as high as $3,000 in 2023, as per some reports. Apple monitor polishing cloths can be very expensive. The headphones are very expensive. It’s impossible to find a VR headset that doesn’t have next-level Apple processors and can provide retina-level resolution with an eye track and high-end audio.
