NASA’s Curiosity Rover Identifies a ‘Doorway’ to Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a photo last week of a Lovecraftian feature on Mars’ surface: A rectangular and shadowy opening in Mars’ exposed rock, which looks like it leads to the Martian underground.
This image was taken by the Curiosity Rover’s Mastcam on May 7, as it ascended Mount Sharp.
Although the image is grainy and black-and-white, it doesn’t appear to show an underground alien society.
Ashwin Vasavada, a Gizmodo project scientist in the Mars Science Laboratory, said that it is just the space between two fractures within a rock. He spoke to Gizmodo today by phone. Vasavada, a Mars Science Laboratory project scientist, said that the formation is not the entrance to a dungeon level. He said, “We’ve been walking through an area formed from an ancient sand dune.” These sand dunes have been cemented together over the years, creating the sandstone outcrops Curiosity is passing through.
