A Supermassive Black Hole is seen in the Middle of our Galaxy
On Thursday, astronomers revealed the first image showing a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. Its gravity is so strong that it bends time and space. The glowing ring of light forms around the core and creates eternal darkness.
The mass of the black hole seen from Earth, near the constellation Sagittarius has an equivalent to 4 million suns. It is shown in the new image with three bright spots on a ring that tilts toward Earth, surprising scientists.
Scientists said that the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is calm by comparison to other black holes. It’s as quiet as a star gobbler and can reach temperatures in the trillions of degrees.
Feryal Ozel, a University of Arizona Astronomer, described the feat as “the first direct picture of the gentle giant at the center of our galaxy.”
